1

Bedding & Sleep Essentials (Twin XL)

Almost all US college residence halls use Twin XL mattresses (measuring 39" × 80"), which are 5 inches longer than standard twin beds. Standard twin sheets will not fit. Dorm mattresses are notoriously hard and thin, so investing in comfort is priority #1.

2 sets of Twin XL Sheets

Always bring two sets so you have clean sheets on laundry day.

Memory Foam Mattress Topper (2" to 3")

The single highest-impact upgrade for dorm sleep quality.

Mattress Pad / Encasement

Protects against allergens, dust, and years of prior dorm bed use.

Comforter or Duvet with Washable Cover

Colleges are often heavily air-conditioned in fall and drafty in winter.

2 Quality Bed Pillows + Pillowcases

Consider a body pillow or backrest wedge for studying in bed.

Cozy Throw Blanket

Great for late-night desk study sessions or movie nights with friends.

2

Bathroom, Shower & Personal Care

Unless you are lucky enough to have a private en-suite bathroom, you will be sharing a communal hall bathroom with 20–40 other students. Fast-drying, portable gear is essential.

Mesh Shower Caddy with Drainage Holes

Mesh dries fast; avoid solid plastic buckets that pool dirty shower water.

Waterproof Shower Shoes / Flip-Flops

Non-negotiable rule for communal dorm hall showers.

2–3 Bath Towels & Washcloths

Quick-drying Turkish cotton or waffle weave prevents damp towel mildew.

Bathrobe or Wrap Towel

For walking down co-ed hallways back to your room.

Toiletry Kit (Toothbrush, Paste, Shampoo)

Keep duplicates stocked so you don't run out during midterms.

First Aid Kit & Common OTC Meds

Advil, Tylenol, band-aids, cold/flu medicine, thermometer, antacids.

Nail Clippers, Tweezers & Grooming

The small things everyone forgets until they desperately need them.

Durable Laundry Hamper with Straps

Backpack-style laundry bags make hauling heavy loads to the basement easy.

3

Electronics, Cables & Desk Setup

Dorm rooms often only have two wall electrical outlets, usually placed in the most awkward corners behind furniture. Reliable power distribution is vital.

10-foot or 12-foot Braided Phone Charger

Standard 3ft cables will not reach lofted beds from the wall outlet.

Dorm-Approved Heavy Duty Power Strip

Check campus housing rules: must have an on/off circuit breaker switch.

Desk Lamp with Integrated USB / Outlets

Warm LED lighting prevents eye strain and roommate light wars.

Noise-Cancelling Headphones / Earbuds

Crucial for studying in crowded dorms, libraries, and common lounges.

Laptop, Charger & Protective Sleeve

Register your serial number with campus security during week 1.

Ethernet Cable (Cat6, 14ft–25ft)

Campus Wi-Fi drops during exams; wired dorm ethernet is rock solid.

4

The Roommate Agreement: What to Share vs. Bring Your Own

The #1 packing mistake college freshmen make is arriving on move-in day with two giant mini-fridges, two microwaves, and zero floor space. Avoid the awkward trunk unloading dispute by dividing appliances in advance.

Communal: Agree Who Brings What
  • • Mini-Fridge with Freezer: One person brings or rents through campus housing.
  • • Microwave: Check wattage limits (usually 700–900W max allowed).
  • • Electric Kettle or Keurig: Great for tea, coffee, and late-night ramen.
  • • Full-Length Door Mirror: Hangs on the back of the room entry door.
  • • Area Rug (5' × 7' or 6' × 9'): Softens cold, hard dorm linoleum tile.
  • • Standing Tower Fan: Older dorms lack central air in August and September.
  • • Dustpan & Small Broom or Cordless Vacuum: Keeps the communal floor clean.
Bring Your Own (Personal Boundaries)
  • • Laptop & Academic Tech: Never share personal computers.
  • • Personal Snacks & Drinks: Establish ground rules for food sharing early.
  • • Hair Styling Tools & Dryers: High power draw; keep in your own caddy.
  • • Personal Pillows & Blankets: Keep separate for comfort and hygiene.
  • • Desk Supplies & Textbooks: Keep organized at your own desk station.
  • • Medications & Prescriptions: Stored securely in your personal locker or drawer.
💡 How Pack to Dorm Solves This: On packtodorm.com, you can tag any item as "Shared Dorm Item" and mark whether You, your Roommate, or a 50/50 Split covers it. Both of you can view the live status from your phones to ensure zero duplicates.
5

Priority 1: The "Open First" Moving Day Bag

Do not pack these items deep in the trunk under 12 cardboard boxes. Keep a clear tote bag or backpack in the front seat of the car. When you first enter your dorm room, you will need these within 10 minutes:

Disinfecting Wipes & Paper Towels

Wipe down the mattress, desk, and drawers BEFORE opening any boxes.

Scissors or Box Cutter

You cannot open packing tape without a blade.

Twin XL Sheets & Bed Pillow

Make your bed first! When you are exhausted at midnight, you will thank yourself.

Phone Charger & Power Strip

Plug in right away so your phone doesn't die while coordinating with family.

Shower Flip-Flops & Clean Towel

For that well-deserved post-move-in shower.

Trash Bags (Heavy Duty)

Move-in day generates mountains of cardboard and plastic wrap.

Student ID & Dorm Check-in Barcode

Required to pick up keys and parking tags.

Water Bottles & High-Protein Snacks

Carrying boxes up four flights of stairs is exhausting work.

6

What NOT to Bring (Dorm Prohibited Items)

Resident Advisors (RAs) conduct mandatory room fire safety inspections during the first two weeks. Prohibited items will be confiscated and can result in housing fines. Leave these at home:

Open Flame & Heat Sources

Candles, incense, hot plates, space heaters, and electric grills (George Foreman).

Nails & Permanent Mounting Tape

Dorm walls must not be damaged. Stick strictly to painter's tape or approved Command strips.

Oversized Winter Gear in August

Heavy winter parkas and snow boots take up valuable closet space. Have them shipped or bring them after Thanksgiving.

Too Many Coffee Mugs & Plates

You only need one mug, one bowl, and one fork. More dishes just pile up in the sink unwashed.

7

Moving Day Strategy: Why Box Placards Save Your Sanity

On move-in day, college campuses resemble chaotic airports: volunteer student movers, frantic parents, and packed elevators. When boxes are labeled with random scribbled marker, items get misplaced in wrong rooms.

Print 8.5" × 11" Box Placards with Pack to Dorm

With Pack to Dorm, you can assign items to Box 1, Box 2, Box 3 and print high-contrast, official-looking packing slips with your school colors, mascot, student name, and dorm hall number. Tape them to the side of every box so campus volunteers drop your gear straight into your room.
